Pride and Prejudice is widely recognized as Jane Austen’s masterpiece and one of the greatest works of English literature. First published in 1813, it tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a headstrong and intelligent young woman from a middle-class family, and her romantic and social trials in early 19th-century England.
